The Losses of the Fish Industry in Yemen by the Saudi-Led Coalition: Report

The Fishing industry in Yemen, which is considered one of the most important sectors of the Yemeni economy, is being targeted by the Saudi-led aggression in all ways, causing a humanitarian crisis that has never occurred before.

One of the latest reports issued by the Ministry of Fisheries in Yemen stressed that the number of losses is massive. The tally of the losses of the fish sector as a result of the direct targeting of the fishermen, boats, ports and landing points of fish over the past three years, amounted to four billion and 586 million and 301 thousand dollars.

The number of the taken lives by the Saudi-led coalition of the fishermen tallied to 151 fishermen and 45 wounded.

The number of fishermen who have lost their sources of income is 36 thousand and 688, while the number of those who lost their jobs as employees is 96 and the number of auxiliary workers is 18 thousand and 652 workers.

The number of fishing boats destroyed by the coalition is up to 222 boats; thus, the amount lost is estimated to five million and 248 thousand and 536 dollars.

The number of boats that stopped their activity as a result of the targeting of landing sites, is four thousand and 586 boats, mostly in Midi district of Hajjah province and locations of Dhubab, Bab al-Mandab and Mukha in Taiz province, losing a production amount of one billion and 58 million and 312 thousand dollars.

The Saudi regime affected the livelihood of more than two and a half million citizens who live in the coastal cities and the villages along the coastal strip, in addition to the average annual per capita consumption of fish at the level of the Republic, where it gained 2.5 kg instead of 14 kg; thus, the percentage lost is 85% .

The bombardment on the infrastructure of Midi and Hima ports, and 11 fish landing sites, as well as the center of exports, resulted in the loss of 13 million, 32 thousand and 558 dollars.

The number of establishments whose activities have came to a halt due to the decline of fish production, reached to more than 50 different establishments, such as factories, preparation plants, etc., resulted in a loss of five million and 262 thousand dollars.

The direct targeting of villages and fishing communities by aviation and warships resulted in a large wave of displacement that had a disastrous impact on the areas that were displaced, especially as fishermen are among the poorest in society.

Losses of industries and services associated with fish activities reached 8 million, 269 thousand and 442 dollars, while losses in fees and customs amounted to 42 million, 332 thousand, 484 dollars.

At the beginning of the war, 26/ March/ 2015, the Saudi-led coalition fighter jets started its attacks on the capital Sana’a, marking its first massacre on civilians who live in a residential neighborhood area, near Sana’a International Airport.

Vast violations and crimes in all levels all over Yemen are being committed by the US-Saudi-led coalition, daily bombardment in most provinces and villages as well as an overall siege on Yemen with the direct destruction to the infrastructure and economy of Yemen.
