Reuters: Saudi Arabia block the opening of an independent investigation for violations in Yemen

Human Rights Council of the United Nations on Thursday refused to open an independent investigation into violations in Yemen and demanded instead a national commission of inquiry to investigate abuses committed by all parties including the killing of civilians and attacks on hospitals.

The move sparked a disappointment activists in the field of human rights who were invited – along with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Prince Zeid Ra’ad Al-Hussein Bin – to open, especially in air raids by Saudi alliance in support of the Government of Hadi independent investigation.

An official at the United Nations, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Britain’s ally Saudi Arabia blocked the draft resolution, which was sponsored by the Netherlands in the European Union.

The draft resolution provides for the Dutch to send a fact-finding mission of the United Nations fact to Yemen to report on violations there in March 2017.

The Delegation of the European Union said that the Arab draft resolution rate “is the text represents a reasonable compromise, and that the European Union would support the decision.”
