Yemeni Midwives Association Organizes a Course in Sana’a

A training course began yesterday in the Yemeni capital, Sana’a, on the best health practices and referral. The course will be be held for a period of 6 days, organized by the National Association of Yemeni Midwives in collaboration with the Health and Population Office and the support of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs OCHA (UCHA) ..

The course aims to boost the capabilities of 12 midwives representing the districts of Safan, Manakah and Nihm in Sana’a. The course also focuses on the best health practices for the mother and newborn’s health, applying the referral system and methods of modern education in such practices, take effective measures to neonatal resuscitation. In addition, taking care for the underweight and pregnant women during four routine visits, family planning methods, providing postpartum and bleeding after birth care, preventing infection and immunization of children after birth and giving mothers vitamin doses or promoting breastfeeding.

Secretary General of the Assembly, Fatoom Ali Noureddine, explained that the course aims to raise the efficiency of midwives and develop their skills in the field of health best practices and referral through training them on effective measures for the third stage of birth and other necessary skills on the aspect of care during pregnancy and how to deal with cases of dystocia and bleeding, high blood pressure as their regions are witnessing a rise in the mortality rate of mothers and newborns.

Noureddine added that the course will assist midwives in gaining a number of other technical skills related to the ways and methods of reporting to the concerned authorities and how to deal with critical situations and referring them first hand.

She pointed out that the training course comes as a part of other similar activities that will be implemented in order to improve the level of health services provided in different areas regarding the reproductive health, behavior change, improving the performance, how to deal with critical situations and what contributes to reducing the proportion of deaths among pregnant women and newborns.
