US Senator Elizabeth Warren called for an investigation into whether former members of the United States have participated in assassination attempts while working in the UAE.
Warren, a potential candidate for the upcoming US presidential election, pointed out that reports, released by Buzzfeed new website, proved that the UAE had hired the US company under the name of Spear Operations Group in 2015 to carry out assassinations in Yemen.
“If there are reports of crimes committed by US mercenaries, then this raises questions about the criminal liability of the participants, and any US government official may be aware of or support such activities,” Warren wrote in a letter to the Justice Department.
The company reportedly hired special operations soldiers in the United States to perform contracted duties, the report said.
Abraham Golan, the company’s founder, acknowledged the existence of the assassination program in Yemen. “I was running it. We did it. The UAE has approved it within the coalition,” he said.
In her letter to the Anti-Terrorism Act and the 1996 death penalty, which makes it illegal for a person on the United States to conspire to kill, kidnap or maim a person abroad, and if anyone does so, it is criminalized under the conspiracy to kill.
Warren sent an additional letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo requesting information on whether any State Department official was aware of the direct involvement of the Americans in the killings.
“We are disturbed by claims that private corporations have recruited former American military personnel to participate in the sort of operations described in recent media reports,” the spokesperson wrote in an email.
The UAE, alongside Saudi Arabia and more than 7 other countries, have been attacking Yemen for nearly four years, under the support of the US. According to Buzzfeed.news, the UAE has hired former US soldiers as mercenaries to assassinate prominent members within the reform political party in Yemen, also known as the Islah party. It is noteworthy that members of the aforesaid party are being assassinated in the UAE occupied Yemeni coastal northern province of Aden by unidentified gunmen.
Spear Operations Group main assassination goal was to kill the local leader in the province of Aden, Mayo but failed because so because Mayo knew he was going to be killed 10 minutes before the operation was held so he disappeared out of sights and no one has seen him again.
The UAE was exposed by a team of probe experts, hired by the UN, saying that the UAE has more than 18 secret prisons in Yemen’s Aden, which are under the supervision of American soldiers. According to the who detainees who were held in UAE secret prisons, said they are not sure whether the Americans were formal US militants or just mercenaries hired by the UAE.
Two officials from one of the secret prisons in Aden, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that mercenaries including Americans are present at all the Emirati military camps and sites, including the prisons. Their mission is mainly to guard.
